Back to Steam today and before lunch we played an Iowa map where I finally managed to play the game reasonably competitively. In fact Crabro actually thought at one point that he wouldn't be able to catch me. The end result was yet another win for him but at least it had genuinely felt like a game that could go either way and there was only a point or two in it at the end.
After lunch we played a Sicily/Malta map which was rather challenging and I lost by a much greater margin having failed to get to grips with the terrain. Both games were very enjoyable anyway.
With an hour and a half to spare but feeling like something simpler we returned to Maori and had a couple of games. The first was a standard game and the second was one of the variants involving a player boat moving among the tiles and affecting where the next tile could be laid. Following the earlier pattern, the first game was close while the second was a disaster. I believe I lost both of those as well.
Not wanting to break a streak I also lost the final game of the day when we got out a standard deck of cards and played Ecarté, (hence the heading as a "Vole", or five tricks, is worth two points). At least this final game was a close one.
Despite not winning a thing I had a very enjoyable day's gaming and finally felt more confident in my playing of Steam.
